Honolulu Board of Water Supply Selects IDModeling for Pioneering C-factor Pilot Study
Pasadena, CA USA, Aug 01, 2009 -The Honolulu Board of Water Supply (BWS) is the largest municipal water utility in Hawaii, serving one million customers on O‘ahu with 55 billion gallons of water every year. In order to keep the water flowing, BWS must carefully and proactively manage and invest in its intricate system, consisting of 94 active potable water facilities, 172 storage tanks and more than 2,000 miles of pipeline servicing nearly every community on O‘ahu. The Board, (formed in 1929) had original objectives to modernize the system, meter all water distributed, and seal all faulty, leaking artesian wells in an effort to halt the waste of fresh water. Those goals were realized in the ensuing years. Today, the BWS continues to maintain the water system and values the importance of their hydraulic models with dedicated staff to use these integral tools to efficiently plan, design, and manage their water system.
BWS is moving forward with its plan to more accurately determine the C-factors used in its current water system hydraulic models and has selected IDModeling to perform this study.
“IDModeling (IDM) was selected largely because of the unique nature of the company having extensive experience in water system modeling and hands-on experience with C-factor testing and field calibration,” said Ellen Hirayama, Branch Head of IT Division. “Our team is excited to work with IDModeling’s dedicated staff as we are confident that this project will provide a revealing look into our models which will provide a benchmark for our ongoing modeling efforts.”
“The IDModeling team is grateful to be involved in such an impactful study for BWS. The outcomes of this project will bring a benefit to BWS’ modeling and operational activities for many years to come,” said Rajan Ray, Vice President of IDModeling. “The conditions in Honolulu’s complex system are unique. IDModeling’s field testing and model calibration experience coupled with BWS’ knowledgeable staff will result in a pioneering study that future models can be derived from.”
The purpose of this pilot study is to assist BWS determine a preferred field testing methodology for deriving C-factors for their models. Within this project, IDModeling will define protocols for C-factor testing involving different pipe material, diameter, and internal condition and will provide a result comparison using different testing methodologies.
