Los Angeles County Hydraulic Model User Group Continues to Grow Momentum: Offering Alternative Water Supply and Energy Credit Presentations
Pasadena, CA USA, Aug 18, 2009 - The Los Angeles County Hydraulic Model User Group consists of over a dozen different utilities in the Los Angeles area with a common interest of sharing and learning best practices specifically dealing with hydraulic modeling and data integration. The August meeting was hosted by Glendale Water & Power (GWP), with support and coordination from IDModeling. “The User Group was founded based on the premise that most utilities share common goals for hydraulic modeling”, said Senior Engineer with GWP Leighton Fong, P.E. “Forming a group of peers to discuss the advantages and challenges of real-world applications is beneficial for all who attend”.
The User Group forum discusses hydraulic model related issues such as water supplies, daily operational and future planning scenarios, water quality, energy management, software, training, and support expectations to create an enabling and empowering environment within which the utility can share experiences and benefit from the resulting knowledge and build confidence to use the hydraulic model internally.
“The User Group was informative and allowed the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power the opportunity to gain perspective on other utility challenges as well as to share our viewpoints and expectations on our hydraulic modeling applications”, said Civil Engineering Associate with LADWP Linh Phan, P.E. “The City of Arcadia’s Alternate Water Supply presentation was especially interesting in how they used their model to analyze their water supply options.”
“Cities, water districts, and municipal organizations attend these Hydraulic Model User Groups to seek out more efficient methods to operate their systems by employing the latest tools and techniques available”, said Jay Rook, Client Service Manager for EnerNOC. “EnerNOC services, supported by the operational validation and response opportunity brought by the computer model, offer a unique combination of revenue generation, cost savings, and customer responsiveness from energy credits, system planning, and intelligent system operations.”
Cross-utility relationships and knowledge-sharing from these User Groups continue to raise the importance and value of the hydraulic model, catalyzing day-to-day modeling applications for utilities across the country. Concept
A forum for communication centered around hydraulic modeling for water, wastewater, stormwater, and recycled water systems and all things closely related. Contributors include utilities, consulting firms, software vendors, government agencies, and academia.
Origin
Glendale Water & Power (GWP) engaged in a selection process for its Hydraulic Model As-Needed Contract in 2008. The process was highlighted by the enthusiasm and deep-interest received from IDModeling’s references to continue the hydraulic model learning process and hydraulic model applications. As a result, Leighton Fong, Senior Engineer with the GWP championed the original formation of the Los Angeles Hydraulic Model User Group, originally consisting of largely IDModeling clients, but quickly expanding to include all utilities interested. Since then, the User Groups have expanded to include more regions, gaining national interest.
The primary purpose of these modeling user groups is to learn through sharing different approaches to improve water, wastewater, recycled, and stormwater systems through modeling. The enthusiasm and attendee list continues to grow along with the need to have a central, non-software specific forum to document best practices, share tips, and discuss modeling-related news.
