City of Anaheim Selects IDModeling, Inc.
To Implement a Comprehensive Hydraulic Model

The Challenge:

The City of Anaheim seeks to create and calibrate its water distribution system hydraulic model with support of the City’s already established GIS data sets while incorporating data from its original hydraulic model. They also wish to develop automatic control sets in the model. The control sets will allow the model to run automatically and dynamically respond to changing system conditions. The City’s system is controlled manually by a team of professional operators. The City of Anaheim’s system includes twenty-one active wells, eight connections to MWD, and is capable of supplying about eight million gallons an hour to its 345,000 residents.

The Solution:

IDModeling, Inc. (IDM) is currently working to make sure that the hydraulic model accurately represents the performance of the City’s system for both near-term and long-term planning; while leveraging and communicating with City GIS data sets.

IDM has implemented their specialized model standards, tools, and templates. Additional services include: steady state and 10-day system-wide EPS calibrations (for both average and max day conditions) to enable the model to perform water quality simulations and water age analysis. The high level of care applied during calibration under a wide variety of operating conditions will help to ensure that the City’s model will be robust and useful for many years to come.

IDModeling continues to make full use of GIS, although the GIS data model is significantly different than that required by the water data model. This is enabled by IDM’s rigorous QA tools and procedures which increase communication between the City and IDM to rapidly resolve model connectivity questions.

In addition, IDM is hosting a number of control workshops to collaborate with operators in order to develop system-wide automatic controls. Although the system is operated manually, the City’s goal is to establish control sets to allow the model to respond automatically to a range of operational conditions.  IDM’s expertise in building complex models is helping to clarify the complex issues surrounding the development of such a detailed collection of control sets.
