Anchorage Water & Wastewater Utility
Achieve Maximum Communication
Between Sewer Model and GIS

The Challenge:

One of Anchorage Water & Wastewater Utility’s (AWWU’s) main goals in building and developing their wastewater model is to maintain a close relationship between their advanced GIS database and the hydraulic model.  This close relationship will create opportunities for AWWU to align Engineering, Operations, and GIS departments from a staffing and technical perspective, and will improve communications, model accuracy, and model update efficiency. The first step in proving the feasibility of maintaining this relationship was to perform a pilot study on a select area of the wastewater system.

The Solution:

IDModeling (IDM) worked closely with AWWU throughout the pilot project to make the specific changes necessary to the geodatabase to enable two-way data sharing between the model and GIS.  Tasks in this study included:  Model element attribute development and mapping, rigorous QA/QC of the source GIS, hydraulic model construction using MWH Soft InfoSewer’s GIS Gateway and connectivity tools, facility development, test simulations to prove successful model construction, updating the GIS and incorporating those test changes into the model, and running follow-on simulations to demonstrate that all model connectivity and attributes were preserved.

AWWU and IDM worked closely together to develop customized Feature Manipulation Engine (FME) scripts and enterprise modeling data tables that enabled AWWU to export GIS data directly into model-ready files for each model element type – pipes, manholes, wet wells, and pumps – with only minor changes to the enterprise GIS.

AWWU’s goal is to develop a Long Term Data Management Plan.  During the pilot project, IDM documented the data fields, attribute mapping, and model update procedures to provide the foundation and framework for the Long Term Data Management Plan.
