United Water and IDModeling Team
Nominated for Innovation Award
in Water Resources
|
The team of United Water and IDModeling, Inc. (IDM) were recently selected as a semi-finalist for Bentley System’s prestigious “BE Awards of Excellence” due to their innovative work to streamline the way United Water models are developed, calibrated, documented, and updated. The BE Awards honor the extraordinary work of Bentley users who are improving and sustaining the world’s infrastructure. These nominated projects set benchmarks and showcase the imagination and technical mastery of the organizations that created them. The following is a summary of the featured project which won the joint nomination:
The Challenge:
It was agreed by both United Water and IDModeling that by reducing the time to develop and calibrate models, budget dollars could be more appropriately allocated towards learning the water system and developing proactive scenarios within the model to improve planning and optimize operational strategies. Ultimately, this will result in improved project selection, enhanced customer service, and significant capital & operational cost-savings.

The Solution:
The primary goal of the project was to develop standards to streamline the way current United Water models (and future models) are built, developed, calibrated, documented, and updated. Taking this approach yields the following benefits:
Significantly contributes to United Water’s quality assurance programs
IDModeling’s tools and technology that contribute to the accuracy of data and information
in models decrease the possibilities of errors introduced by bad data, thereby contributing to the overall bottom line of managing/operating a water system.
System of standards enhances data quality and improves the quality of the models
United Water’s model standards are well defined and repeatable processes that guarantee that models are built, developed, and calibrated the same way each time so that there are no gaps in the process, minimizing opportunities for errors.
Helps United Water employees and contractor/consultants to manage projects better
United Water’s large-scale, multi-team modeling projects require extraordinary coordination of data and information. Establishing modeling standards provides a concrete way for United Water employees and contractors to better coordinate work, hand off data electronically, and negotiate change-orders with regard to model criteria, re-work, correctness and completion. Standardized models also serve as a hub of organizational knowledge and provide another opportunity for new United Water employees to rapidly increase their familiarity with UW’s various distribution systems.
Provides opportunity for United Water to provide premium services
Efficiencies achieved with the model standards and related tools let United Water streamline
processes, develop capital projects with greater accuracy, and offer premium services to clients.
