City of Bellingham, WA
Implements Water Distribution System Model to
Guide Capital Improvement Studies
The Challenge:
When challenged to meet pending EPA Stage II Disinfectant Bi-Product Initial Distribution System Evaluation (IDSE) regulations, System Specific Study criteria, the City of Bellingham opted to implement a comprehensive water distribution system hydraulic model.

As part of the design criteria, the model needed to tightly integrate with the City's Geodatabase and provide a foundation for operational, planning and maintenance activities as well as a critical tool to evaluate the feasibility of capital improvement projects.

The Solution:
Following an extensive selection process, the City of Bellingham selected the team of EarthTech Engineers and IDModeling to develop and calibrate a comprehensive water distribution system that meets IDSE requirements.

As the designated sewer collection system hydraulic model consultant for the City, IDModeling, Inc. will lead the construction, development, calibration and analysis for the City's water distribution system within the context of the IDSE. Bellingham's extensive water system consists of 3,000 pipes, 14 tanks and 11 booster stations and 13 pressure zones.

IDModeling will use MWH H2OMAP Water modeling software to facilitate GIS capabilities for multi-day calibration. The project will include demand updating, pipeline and facility attribute updating and Steady State, 24-Hour Extended Period Simulation (EPS) and multi-day EPS for tank, demand, boundary condition periodicities and water age estimations. The Bellingham hydraulic model integrates the City's Geodatabase layers, flow monitoring data/locations and SCADA operational readings to reach hydraulic calibration. The project, in concert with the City's Sewer Comprehensive Plan, develops a model for master planning and operational improvements, includes sophisticated GIS integrations and is intended for use on a weekly basis for capital improvements.

In addition to model construction, training is delivered for the MWH Soft H2OMAP Sewer modeling software for improved Master Planning QA-QC.
