Crescenta Valley Water District, CA
Develops Advanced GIS-Linked Water Model
for Comprehensive Water System Master Plan
The Challenge:
The Crescenta Valley Water District currently provides water to over 8000 accounts representing a population of approximately 32,000.

As part of its far-reaching Water System Master Plan, District management initiated the development of a new state-of-the-art hydraulic model, linked to GIS.
Crescenta Valley
The Solution:
As a subconsultant to Civiltec Engineering, IDModeling created, developed, calibrated and analyzed a multi-day simulation water distribution system model using MWH Soft H2ONET as well as the development of SCADA to Model linkage specification. The City’s water system model consists of over 20 miles of pipeline, 11 pressure zones, 5 service zones, over 10 wells, over 30 booster pumping stations, 20 tanks, 17 flow control valves and 4 pressure regulating stations.

Model detail included all pipes with piping segmentation at all changes in diameter, years of installation, material and fire hydrant. As part of the demand development module, IDModeling linked parcel layers to customer billing data and spatial demand assignments from tributary parcels to the nearest model junction.

The completed model was calibrated to steady state and extended period simulation (EPS) using 15 hydrant flow tests as well as SCADA results to identify tank level and pump trending based on the identified maximum day. In addition, the model was calibrated against 150 data points across the system, including both static and dynamic (during hydrant flow) testing and reached +/- 5% or 5 psi within observed values. Additionally, the hydraulic model was calibrated for a 3-day period for both average and maximum day demand conditions. The calibrated model was applied to tasks including existing and ultimate CIP development and prioritizations, Energy Simulations, Water Age and quality analyses and operational Emergency drain and fill scenarios. The detailed hydraulic model is key to helping District engineers assess the District’s day-to-day service questions and overall network efficiency.
