City of Hesperia, CA
Creates Water/Sewer/Recycled Models
to Manage Growth Today... and Tomorrow
The Challenge:
Since the turn of the century, the City of Hesperia, CA, located in the Mojave Desert of Southern California, has reportedly grown in population by almost 40% and shows no signs of slowing down in the next decade.

As part of its preparation of a 20-year Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) created to manage the city’s precious water resources and prepare for long-term continued growth, the Hesperia looked to update its existing water distribution system model and create the city’s first sewer collection system model and recycled water model.
Hesperia
The Solution:
IDModeling updated the existing water distribution system model as well as performing the subsequent analysis to identify and alleviate deficiencies and the feasibility of time-of-pumping using MWH Soft H2ONET. Tasks involve updating of diurnal curves, demands and demand allocations, pumping controls per SCADA and recalibrating the water model for 168-hour duration.

Additionally, IDModeling created and developed the City’s first sewer collection system model. Built in MWH Soft InfoSewer, the IDModeling team converted and consolidated AutoCAD base maps into a sewer model with detail to the residential home tract level. Model calibration of the sewer model matched actual flows from the Victor Valley Water Reclamation Authority treatment plant and to lift station pumping frequency. IDModeling and Carollo Engineers, the overseeing project engineer, used the resulting sewer model to analyze existing infrastructure for CIP planning and future new treatment plant locations.

In the third phase of the overall master plan project, IDModeling created a backbone recycled water model to define Hesperia’s future water needs. The model, created in MWH Soft InfoWater, includes the design of a distribution system as well as tank sighting and pump station allocations in alignment with forecasted recycled water customers.

Together, these three models provide the Hesperia Water District with critical analysis and visualization tools necessary to respond to the needs of the region’s rapidly growing population with speed and accuracy.
