Town of Manchester, CT
Implements Comprehensive Hydraulic Model
to Evaluate Critical Watershed
|
|
The Challenge:
The Town of Manchester's Dry Brook Culvert flows in a north-to-south direction through the primarily urbanized downtown section of Manchester and outfalls into Hop Brook.
As part of its continual system improvement plan, the Town looked to better evaluate its storm water drainage network within the Dry Brook Culvert watershed particularly
during various storm events that have been causing flooding issues in certain parts of downtown.

The Solution:
The Town of Manchester selected the team of Tighe & Bond and IDModeling to develop a hydraulic model of the storm water conveyance systems within the Dry Brook Culvert watershed, including catch basins, manholes, culverts, outlets,
channels, intermittent watercourses and detention basins using Bentley's SewerGEMS. This model incorporates approximately 650 known Town-owned storm drainage structures
and approximately 700 pipe segments located within the Dry Brook watershed.
Once developed, the model was calibrated at key locations by comparing the model results to flow monitoring locations as well as known historical problem flooding areas. IDModeling ran scenarios that included 2, 10, 25, 50 and 100 year storm events.
As part of the model calibration/development, IDModeling evaluated the hydraulic condition of existing storm drainage network to identify deficiencies such as undersized culverts, insufficient
channel capacity, and potential erosion problems. Key in this effort was the evaluation of documented complaints, areas of historically high maintenance and areas of anticipated
future development. The final report included a long-term capital improvement plan and top ten suggested capital improvement projects prioritized by benefit-to-cost ratio to better
serve the Town's population of approximately 55,000.
