IDSE-Compliant Hydraulic Model
Provides Foundation for Pennsylvania American Water Growth,
Ceasetown-Watres Water System
The Challenge:
Pennsylvania American Water Company (PAWC), a wholly owned subsidiary of American Water, is the largest regulated water authority in Pennsylvania.

In an effort to effectively meet the recently mandated EPA and State of Pennsylvania drinking water regulations, specifically Initial Distribution System Evaluation (IDSE) system requirements, Pennsylvania American Water looked to further develop its existing skeletonized hydraulic model for the Ceasetown-Watres system.
PA Water
The Solution:
Using GIS and CAD routines, IDModeling successfully updated Pennsylvania American Water’s existing model of approximately 1000 pipes to an all-pipe model of over 10,000 pipes using Bentley Systems WaterGEMS water distribution modeling solution.

IDModeling worked closely with PAWC staff to validate piping configurations and to collect fire flow test data to calibrate for steady-state conditions. The model with its customized queries, background layers, tables, and reports served as the platform to document/relay questions and answers from PAWC and from IDModeling. Steady-state calibration was a combination of utilizing IDModeling tools and WaterObjects.NET (Bentley’s application programming interface) to automatically synchronize the model results with the 20+ field tests for efficient calibration.

Once calibrated for steady-state conditions, the IDModeling team will populate the SCADA data and pump control information to calibrate for extended periods simulation (EPS) ultimately performing a water age analysis to determine the locations of the oldest water in the system.

The IDSE-compliant hydraulic model meets EPA and State of Pennsylvania requirements and provides the Pennsylvania American Water company the framework to better manage its operations and more efficiently monitor water quality. The company owns and operates 38 water treatment facilities, three wastewater facilities and approximately 8,900 miles of pipeline to serve customers in over 372 communities in 35 Pennsylvania counties. The company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of American Water, the largest and most geographically diverse provider of water services in North America.
