Walnut Valley Water District, CA
Implements 1:1 GIS Water and Recycled Water Models
for IDSE Compliance
The Challenge:
The growing Walnut Valley Water District is continually seeking ways to better manage its complex infrastructure with efficiency and accuracy while meeting federal and state regulatory requirements, specifically the newly implemented EPA IDSE Stage 2 Disinfectant Byproduct Rule.

Ideally, a comprehensive water and recycled water hydraulic model of the entire network would provide the analytical tools necessary to drive current and future operational expansions while maintaining a high level of service and regulatory compliance.
Walnut Valley
The Solution:
As the lead consultant, IDModeling evaluated existing resources including a comprehensive District-wide GIS. Using MWH Soft InfoWater, IDModeling developed two hydraulic models, each of which maintains a complementary 1:1 link to the District's GIS. The domestic system (potable water) model is designed to meet IDSE requirements from the ground up, accurately representing every detail of the physical system.

In addition, the domestic system model was calibrated under steady state conditions to match over 240 points in the system. Extended period calibration was achieved for seven days for both the IDSE-representative week and the maximum demand week, matching water levels at 15 tanks throughout the distribution system.

As these hydraulic models are critical to ongoing planning activities, speed was of the essence. IDModeling staff developed both models' basic system geometry and populated the attribute database in less than a month, including the addition of over 27,000 pipes as well as junctions, valves, pumps and tanks.
