IDModeling Develops & Calibrates
GIS-based Hydraulic Model
for City of Weatherford, TX
The Challenge:
First incorporated in 1858, the historic community of Weatherford, TX, occupies an area of about 35 square miles and supports a population of about 20,000.

To better manage this network, city planners looked to create a comprehensive technology-driven Water Master Plan that combined its citywide GIS with the extensive analytical capabilities of a hydraulic model. This combination would allow the city to manage the existing network and forecast system updates and expansions while meeting federal regulatory criteria for drinking water.
Weatherford
The Solution:
As Project Manager/Consultant, IDModeling developed a hydraulic model with the City of Weatherford’s existing GIS database as well as a variety of other resources including city documents, customer billing information, SCADA trending data, facility and as-built drawings as well as discussions with city staff.

To calibrate the final model, IDModeling evaluated peak day conditions. The team established boundary conditions in the model using tank levels from SCADA trending data. By inputting these tank levels and running the model with the average day demand, staff modeled pump flows and discharge pressures. These model pumping values and pressures were then compared to SCADA pumping values for calibration to validate a proper matching between model and field. A pressure contour map was developed for the Operations department to establish a visual representation of the varying pressures in the system.

To assist with pipe replacement planning, IDModeling staff further evaluated the critical pipes in the water distribution modeling network using WaterObjects, the programmable application interface of Bentley Systems WaterGEMS. WaterObjects was used to link the customer database to the identified critical pipes in the model in order quantify how many and which customers would be affected if a pipe or valve was to fail.
